2005 Coins
The big news for 2005 has to be that the British Royal Mint is to issue some of its 2005 coins and sets early, so that they will be available for Christmas. This is unprecedented for the Royal Mint, but perhaps they are learning from the example of the Perth Mint in Australia, who very efficiently issue many of their next year's coins during the last quarter of the current year. Perhaps they have also seen our "Next Year's Coins" pages on our websites, and realised that people want next year's coins early, as Christmas gifts, New Year gifts, and just because many collectors are keen to get their new coins as soon as possible.
During late 2004, we will modify this page as news of 2005 issues become available.

2005 Commemorative Coins
Writing this in late 2004, it is fascinating to try to guess what events will be commemorated on coins of 2005. Looking back in history for notable events, we come up with:-

For British Coins

The Bi-Centenary of Nelson's Victory at Trafalgar
There will be two crowns issued, one with Nelson as its theme, and one with Trafalgar.
Guy Fawkes Gunpowder Plot Ł2 Coin.
Samuel Johnson's Dictionary - Fifty Pence.
End of World War II - Ł2 Featuring St. Paul's Cathedral.
Prince Charles & Camilla Parker Bowles Wedding

Year 2005 Gold Sovereigns
2005 sovereigns will have a St. George and Dragon reverse, but with a difference! Details of the exact design are embargoed at present, but we believe that it will be a stylised version of Saint George slaying a dragon. Issue limits for the uncirculated version may be kept at 100,000 and the proofs at 12,500 plus some reserved for proof sets, although it is still too early to be precise. Keep watching this space for further updates as details become available. This will also apply to the half sovereigns, and also to the gold proof Ł2 and Ł5 coins also. This also will apply to all the coins in the 3 coin and 4 coin gold proof sovereign sets.
Availability is likely to be about the second week in January 2005 for the uncirculated (bullion) version, although we are still waiting for confirmation of this, and possibly the same time or later for the proofs.

Proofs Sovereigns in January 2005?
For year 2005, the release date for the proofs may return to April instead of January. We will keep this page updated.

Half Sovereigns
2005 half sovereigns will also be a special version of the St. George and Dragon design as the full sovereigns.
Official release dates are expected to be as for the full sovereigns, although we are still awaiting confirmation of both dates..

2005 British Coin Sets
As usual, these will include proof sets, uncirculated sets, special baby pack sets, wedding packs. Full details on the 2005 Coin Sets page.
We expect have these in stock for immediate delivery from about January 10th 2005.

Prince Charles & Camilla Parker Bowles Wedding
This is the Royal Event of the year. The Royal Mint have announced a commemorative gold medallion, but as far as we know there will be no British coin. A number of Commonwealth countries have announced Charles & Camilla Wedding coins, including:-

Falkland Islands
British Virgin Islands
South Georgia
Sierra Leone
To date, this is the only coin with portraits, all the others have various symbols.

2005 Baby Packs
Each year, the Royal Mint produces a special uncirculated coin set in special gift packaging for babies. These are always popular for birth gifts and christenings.

Silver Britannias
We hear that silver Britannias will be released earlier this year than their usual August date, and may be as early as late January. There will also be a new design this year. Please check regularly on our 2005 Silver Britannias page.

Australia
Our first shipment of 2005 Silver Kookaburras has already arrived. We have these in sizes of 1, 2 and 10 ounces, and 1 kilo. We are accepting orders for immediate delivery.
