1901 - 2001 Victorian Era Crowns
For 2001, the Bank of Zambia have issued a pair of proof crowns, each with a centenary theme. Queen Victoria died in 1901, and Edward VI acceded to the throne in the same year, although no coin issues were made for Edward until 1902.
Both the coins share a common obverse which has the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of the Queen Elizabeth II above the coat of arms of Zambia, all within a tressure, with the inscription:-
ZAMBIA 2001 4000 KWACHA

Victoria Reverse
The first of the crowns features on its reverse, a portrait of Queen Victoria by Donald R. Golder based on the "Old Head" portrait by Thomas Brock used on most British coins from 1893 to 1901.

Edward VII Reverse
The second coin has a very fine portrait of Edward VII as its reverse design. This has been engraved by Donald R. Golder from the original model used for Colonial coins of Edward by G.W. De Saulles. We have always thought that this design was better than the one used on the domestic British coins, and seeing on the reverse of a large crown is very pleasing. We feel that this coin is worth having for the pleasure of owning a piece of numismatic art. Inscription:

Two Versions
Both coins are available in two proof versions, one in cupro-nickel, and one in sterling silver. Both have plain edges. Each coin comes with a its own certificate.
