French Coins
Coins have been issued in and for France since Celtic times, throughout the Roman occupation, and ever since, although various parts of France were at times owned by various kings, princes and dukes.
Ironically, it was the French (or technically, the Frankish) under Charlemagne who invented the duodecimal £sd system before they invented the metric system 1,000 years later*. France abandoned predecimal currency in 1799, and adopted a metric system of currency with 100 centimes to the Franc, a currency system which survived invarious forms until 2002, when the Franc was replaced with the Euro.
*However, it should be noted that it was the Russians under Peter I who introduced the first decimal currency in 1710, which consisted of 100 kopecks to the ruble.
