Life's A Bitch
A few years ago we decided to invest in a few domain names which we thought might be desirable. One of them is lifesabitch.co.uk. For some reason people keep subscribing themselves to newsletters and other internet services using our domain name as part of their e-mail address, e.g. chiefbitch@lifesabitch.co.uk. We then receive the e-mails and newsletters which they have subscribed to for ever. Usually we just ignore them along with the hundreds of other spams each day. Sometimes we try to unsubscribe...
Just Try Unsubscribing!
Some of the list owners don't have a confirmation system before they add people to their mailing lists. The good ones do, but the bad ones don't. The problem is that if someone subscribes under the wrong e-mail address either deliberately or maliciously, then the unwilling recipient can't always get off the list. At best he has to visit a website to unsubscribe, at worst, he needs to enter a password, known only to the original "subscriber", in order to alter and cancel "his account". If he has no password there is almost no way to get off the list. Listbot used to be good in that it insisted on authentication by sending an e-mail to the "subscriber" asking them to confirm their request. If Listbot failed to receive a return confirmation it didn't add the account to its database; apparently Microsoft have killed Listbot off.
Genie One Don't Care
Genie One seem to be one of these companies that haven't thought things out, or don't care. It seems to be impossible to get unsubscribed to their service. Here's what annoys us about them:-
