South Shore Sea Defences
Blackpool and the Fylde Coast has embarked on a programme to strengthen its sea defences. The South Shore Promenade area from Starr Gate to South Pier was completed in 2001.
Flooded Basement?
This view shows the hexagonal concrete pipes to absorb the energy of the waves. We are always amused to see steps disappearing under the sand, as though there was a basement which had become filled and covered by sand. Of course it is because the sand level has been raised by tides and currents, so that it now covers the lower end of the access steps.
Giant's Causeway
The hexagonal shape of the pipes remind us of the naturally occurring basalt columns forming the "Giant's Causeway" in Antrim, Northern Ireland.
