Chiasso
Chiasso is a small town in the Ticino region of Switzerland, with a population of 8,000 residents, but about 20,000 workers. Its main industries include banking, insurance and transportation. The banking business almost certainly grew because it is on the Italian border. For many decades, the Italian economy was not noted for its strength, and its currency was positively weak. Exports of its currency were heavily restricted, and imports of gold or foreign currency were similarly restricted. Switzerland has long been noted for its strong currency. Add these factors together, and you can easily understand that Chiasso's Swiss banks were very popular with Italians smuggling lire over the border to exchange for Swiss francs or gold. Nowadays with a healthier Italian economy, and Italy now using the euro, we presume that the cross border smuggling has diminished, although according to the Financial Planning Association "Illegal asset exportation continues today. In fact, in Ponte Chiasso, a key customs border between Switzerland and Italy, 224 money transfer violations were discovered in 2001 alone".
