The Seychelles
A group of islands off the East African coast, northeast of Madagascar under British control from 1814 to 1976, when it became independent as Republic of Seychelles. A lengthy struggle between France and Great Britain for the islands ended in 1814, when they were ceded to Britain. Independence came in 1976. Socialist rule was brought to a close with a new constitution and free elections in 1993. It remains a member of the British Commonwealth, which partially explains why our photographed coin commemorates the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of York in 1923, later to become King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. It was issued as part of an international "Lady of the Century" collection.

Seychelles has issued its own coins since 1948 as a British Crown Colony, and from 1976 as a republic.
