Silver Penny of Edward I

Edward I
Edward I came to the English Throne in 1272, but for the first seven years, the coin types remained the same as during the previous reign of Henry III, even retaining the name HENRICUS.
A new coinage was produced from 1279, with better workmanship, and a more realistic portrait.
During his reign the groat or fourpence was introduced. Halfpence and farthings were also produced regularly whereas previously it had been the custom to cut pennies into two or four pieces for small change.
The coins of Edward II and III were almost indistinguishable from those of Edward I.

Silver Pennies For about 300 years before, the silver penny had been almost the only coin denomination. It had its roots in the Roman silver denarius, indeed the "d" in £sd stands for denarius.
The silver penny as a denomination dates back to Anglo Saxon times, and has its origins in the Roman silver denarius. It is still produced even today for the Maundy money, and of course the bronze coloured penny still survives even now, although recently made of copper plated steel.
Our authentically produced replica is based on a penny struck at the Tower mint, and has been produced by the ancient process of hand hammering.

Obverse:
Full face crowned portrait of King Edward I, with numerous minor variations of style and lettering.
EDW REX ANGL DNS HYB

Reverse:
Long cross dividing the coin into four quarters, in each of which are four pellets.
The original reverse inscription, of a London issue, would have read:
CIVITAS LONDON
Our engraver has taken some slight liberties with the wording on this particular piece. Of course, in the time of Edward I, any person caught making copies of coins would be severely punished, by a large fine, imprisonment, mutilation, or execution.
