Portuguese Prestige Proof Coin Sets
Starting in 1987, Portugal released a number of platinum coins, often as part of prestige proof coin sets. Each set contained four different coins, one each in gold, silver, platinum and palladium. The issue price of these sets was in excess of $2,000 US per set, and the issue quantity was surprisingly high, in our opinion, considering the high issue price. It appears to have been a very successful series, as all of the sets catalogue in excess of issue price, up to $2,700 per set, according to Krause.

The Golden Era of Portuguese Discoveries
The central theme of the prestige proof sets was the era when Portuguese navigators were leading the world in the discovery of new lands. Each set is described as a series of coins, spanning a number of years. We give details of each series below, from our current stocks .

Series 1: 1987 to 1988
Africa Unveiled 1434 - 1488, featuring great Portuguese voyages of discovery and maritime explorations along the western coast of Africa.
Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of the rounding of Cape of Good Hope by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488.
1988 100 Escudos Platinum. Bartelemeu Dias Cabo da Boa Esperança 1488.

Series 2: 1989 to 1990
The Conquest of the Atlantic 1434 - 1488. Issued to mark the 550th anniversary of the settlement of the Azores in 1439. This series feature Portuguese maritime explorations and voyages of discovery in the Atlantic Ocean from 1336 to 1485.

Uncirculated or Proof
We describe the difference between proof and non-proof coins on our Proof v Uncirculated page. Usually the mintage figure for the proof version of a coin is lower than that of the ordinary or non-proof version, however occasionally, as in this case, the uncirculated has the lower mintage figure.
