Poland
Poland is located in central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania to the east; and the Baltic Sea and Kaliningrad Oblast to the north.
In 1025, Poland became a kingdom and in 1569, it signed the Union of Lublin, forming the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. In 1795 and Poland's territory was partitioned among Prussia, Russia and Austria. The first partition took place in 1772, when Prussia took Polish Pomerania, Russian took the eastern provinces and Austria occupied Galicia. The second partition took place in 1793 when Russian took more of the eastern provinces and Prussia took what remained of western Poland. In the third partition Russia took what was left of the eastern provinces, Prussia took most of central Poland and Austria took what was left of the south. Poland regained its independence as the Second Polish Republic in 1918, after World War I, but lost it again in World War II, then occupied by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
