This website 24carat.co.uk has been online since 1998, with very little downtime (under 0.1%)
Its original bandwidth limit was 8 GB monthly. Over the last few years this was increased to its economic limit of 20GB per month, and to achieve this, we had to call the majority of the images from a second hosting package. In recent weeks, the total bandwidth has been running at just under 40 GB per month.
Over the week ending 16th April 2005, we migrated the site to a new dedicated server package with 150 GB per month bandwidth.
We expected a few glitches as this type of migration was new to us, and we were not disappointed, however we think the move went comparatively smoothly.
Known Glitches So Far
- First, the server had an incorrect character set (UTF8) installed, so all our £ (pound signs) showed as ? (question marks). We fixed this before the site went live by changing the DNS (Domain Name Server) settings.
- When the site went live as the DNS settings propagated, we discovered that the site could not be accessed by the normal URL https://24carat.co.uk or www.24carat.co.uk, but could be accessed without the www. It took at least three hours before we could get this fixed, so anybody trying to access our site in this time (5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday 15th April) may have experienced problems.
- Once we got the www problem solved, we noticed that the pound sign problem had returned. We got this fixed on Saturday 16th April at about 5 p.m.
- We can see that a small number of images have become corrupted during FTP, we will fix and replace these in the next few days.
- Some images were not duplicated under our old two site scheme, so we are working through these to ensure that they appear OK, this is taking quite a time as we are manually checking each image to ensure we have the most up to date version, and there are a large number of images on our site!
