Moroccan Coins
Coins from Morocco and other mainly muslim or arab countries are often ignored by most collectors for a number of reasons. The first is that the inscriptions are often unintelligible to westerners making them difficult to identify and catalogue. Another reason is that most muslim coins don't bear portraits or images of other living things, and appear to be a mess of indecipherable squiggles. Despite this, many islamic coins are very attractive. Many Moroccan coins are not too difficult to identify, and carry attractive patterns.
Denominations
Modern machine-made coins were only introduced in Morocco in 1882. Before this, most coins were crudely cast bronze coins in "Falus" denominations, or hammered silver Dirhams and gold Benuqis. Fortunately the bronze falus coins are circular and not the shape suggested by their name. Even so, we hestitate to think of the effct of translating the expression "show us the money" into Moroccan. The weights of all denominations were variable, and there were no fixed exchange rates between gold silver and bronze coins. After you had finished haggling about the price, you could spend more happy hours haggling about the exchange rate.
Inscriptions
In the French Protectorate period, typical inscriptions are:-
MAROC
EMPIRE CHERIFIEN
or
EMPIRE MAROC CHERIFIEN
