Maltese Coins
From 1530 to 1798, Malta was the base of The Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller, Malta being under the rule of the Knights, who assumed responsibility for issuing coinage for Malta.

Thirty Tari
Our photographs show a silver 30 Tari issued in 1761 for Grandmaster Emmanuel Pinto de Fonseca.

Description
There were 12 Tari to the Scudo, so our coin was also a 2¹/₂ Scudi. There were also 20 Grani (grains) to the Tari.
Strangely enough this made 240 Grains to the Scudo, just as there were 240 Pennies to the Pound Sterling.

Obverse
John the Baptist, standing, holding a banner in his right hand, with a lamb lying down to his left hand side. The legend reads:
NON SURREXIT MAIOR meaning "none arose greater".
In the exergue is the value:
T. XXX (30 Tari)

Reverse
A large crowned and garnished convex shield with coat of arms. The legend reads:
F EMMANUEL PINTO M. M. H. S. S. 1761
