Holy Roman Empire
Brief History
The Holy Roman Empire was the first German Reich or Empire. Its existence dated back to the 10th century and was a major power throughout the Middle Ages. Its territorial ambitions in the Italian Peninsula during this period often put it into conflict with the Pope and the Papal states, leading to either the excommunication of the Emperor or the granting of concessions to him depending on who held the military or political advantage at the time! Although many of the various German states had always enjoyed considerable autonomy under the Imperial system, Central authority began to weaken much further as Martin Luther’s ideas swept through the German states during the 16th and 17th centuries, putting many of them into conflict with the staunchly catholic Holy Roman Imperial dynasty, and by the time Napoleon formally dissolved the Empire in 1806, The Habsburg dynasty had scarcely had any authority in any part of Germany other than Austria for quite some time. In the 19th century, Austria was eventually replaced by Prussia as the leading German state, whilst the former Holy Roman Imperial family concentrated on reigning over their lands outside of Germany, which together constituted the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
