Gold Silver and Base Metal Versions
As from 1990, the five pound crowns have been produced in a number of different versions, and in three different metals. An ordinary uncirculated base metal version will be available from banks and post offices soon. A superior specimen version of this has been available since early January, in an attractive and informative folder. In previous years this has been prices at £9.95, and the same price has been held this year.
A proof version of the above coin will be available as part of the 2002 Proof Coin Sets.
The silver proof version is available at £34.50, although we have it on special offer at only £29.95, and the gold proof version is £525, but our pre-release price is only £495.
Gold Coins for the Golden Jubilee
It is of course very appropriate that special gold coins should be issued to commemorate a golden jubilee. For Queen Victoria's golden jubilee in 1887, the colour of the sovereigns was slightly different from that of other years because of a slightly higher silver content. More importantly, the obverse design used for all the gold and silver coins was changed to a new "jubilee" head. Five pound (£5) and two pound (£2) gold coins were also issued in 1887.
For the 2002 Golden Jubilee, there is a new shield design for the entire gold sovereign series. This will be only the second time that a design other than the famous St. George & Dragon will have been used on sovereigns since 1887.
Advance Orders
As in other recent years, we placed advance orders for all versions of the crown, except the ordinary uncirculated one. We have been accepting advance orders. Customers placing advance orders benefit from a combination of an beneficial advance order price coupled with our price guarantee, under which we absorb the first part of any official price increase, and a customer cancellation clause in the event that we need to ask for more money.
