Estonia - The First Republic

After centuries of Danish, Swedish, German, and Russian rule, Estonia attained independence in 1918. Forcibly incorporated into the USSR in 1940, it regained its freedom in 1991, with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since the last Russian troops left in 1994, Estonia has been free to promote economic and political ties with Western Europe. It will accede to the EU in May 2004 and to NATO in the summer of 2004.

1930 Silver Two Krooni
Tallinn castle is featured on the obverse of this 1930 Estonian 2 Krooni coin in .500 fine silver. The castle only appears on this one issue so we presume it was some kind of commemorative, but we do not know why, possibly connected with German merchants settling in Tallin around 1230.

1992 Ten Krooni
Pictured also is a silver proof crown issued to commemorate the 1992 XXV Olympics in Barcelona.

Eesti Vabarik
The obverse legend on most Estonian coins reads EESTI VABARIIK which translates as Republic of Estonia.
