Equatorial Guinea - 15,000 Francos
The Republic of Equatorial Guinea was discovered by Portuguese explorer Fernão do Po in 1471, and it remained in Portuguese control until 1778 when it was traded to Spain. The British maintained a base there from 1827 to 1843 to combat the slave trade. It was known as Spanish Guinea from 1926 to 1963, and achieved independence in 1968. About this time, it adopted the CFA franc (Communaut Financiaire Africaine) as its currency, and issued its first coins in 1969.
We showcase an impressively large (100 mm) silver proof coin weighing one kilo.
According to Krause, the gross weight is 855.3422 grams, but the only specimen we have seen weighs 1,000 grams. We suspect this is an error in Krause.
