Brief History
This Balkan state was conquered by the Bulgars in the 7th century, since when the area has maintained its identity under Turkish rule from 1395 until it became a fully independent monarchy in 1908. The monarchy was abolished in 1946, and it came under Russian influence until very recently, changing its name to the Republic of Bulgaria in 1989.
