Quirky Marketing
We often fail to understand the Royal Mint's marketing strategy, if we can call it that. It seems that this issue was only marketed, in the UK at any rate, by telephone, and probably only to Royal Mint FDC Coin Club members. Although this must have worked for them, we cannot understand why it did not also get offered in its Bulletin, or on its website. If we were offered an expensive item by telephone, we would want to see photographs, and a hard copy version of the offer. Quite why the Royal Mint chooses to use such quirky and selective marketing, we do not know. Telesales marketing is quite expensive, not everybody likes it, many find it intrusive, and there may have been many potential buyers who will have been disappointed that the Mint failed to give them an opportunity to buy.
In The Dark
As a leading UK dealer, we try to keep up to date with British new issues, and to keep our customers, and website viewers informed, whether they intend to buy from us or not. It is quite frustrating when we do not get to learn about particular issues until several years too late. We believe we provide a valuable and useful function in operating a secondary market for many coin issues. It makes life easier for us to do this, if we get news updates from world mints, including our own, but this rarely happens.
Gold Silver and Base Metal Versions
As from 1990, the five pound crowns have been produced in a number of different versions, and in three different metals. Ordinary uncirculated base metal versions are available from banks and post offices.
Proof versions of the above cupro-nickel coins are also available as part of the 2005 Proof Coin Sets.
The silver proof version and gold proof version were also issued. Although the Trafalgar coins were released in January, anybody wanting the silver or gold proof Nelson coins had to wait until October as the Royal Mint has decided to issue the two coins at different times...
