Scottish Designs on British Coins
In 1937 with the new coinage for George VI, there appeared for the first time, two similar but differing designs for the shilling. One, the English version had an English lion standing on a large crown, another, the Scottish version, had a Scottish lion seated on a smaller crown.
With the new coinage for the start of the reign of Queen Elizabeth in 1953, this issue of twin designs on shillings continued, but the designs changed.
The new English version showed three lions in a crowned shield, the Scottish version showed a single lion rampant within a similar shield.
With the advent of decimal currency, the number of coin designs were reduced, presumably to simplify matters, and to reduce the scope for confusion inherent in such a major change. The shilling's replacement, the "five new pence" carried one single design, but this was a crowned thistle, so the Scottish design tradition started in 1937 was continued, although a separate English version was dropped.
