1968 Countermarked Tonga Palladium Coins
In 1968, Tonga followed the issue of its 1967 palladium coin set with another issue of palladium coins, for the occasion of King Taufa Ahau Tupou IV's fiftieth birthday. The designs were identical to those of 1967, including the date, and were also issued as part of a three coin mint set. The only difference was a round countermark in three lines on the obverse of each coin, reading:- 1918 - TTIV - 1968.
The reverses are identical.

Prices
The bullion price of palladium twice hit a peak of $1,115 US per troy ounce in January 2001. At current exchange rates this would be about £620 per ounce, and this set would have had an intrinsic metal value of £2,170. This makes it seem rather a bargain at our asking price.
The 1968 set catalogues at slightly higher (about 10%) than the 1967 set.
