Switzerland were one of the few countries to issue any gold coins in 1949.
Britain, for example, did not issue any gold sovereigns between 1932 until 1957, except for those included in the proof sets of 1937. Most countries were still struggling to recover from the economic effects of World War II, and were desperately trying to retain or rebuild their gold reserves.

For coin collectors, this does not matter, as collectors very sensibly restrict themselves to collecting dates which exist. If, however, you are looking for an unusual gift to mark a 50th birthday, or a golden wedding, the lack of a suitable gold coin may cause a problem.
