George V First Coinage
During the reign of George V, a number of small but significant changes occurred to the coinage. Paper money began to replace gold coinage from the start of the First World War. Similar changes have since occurred world wide, so that most countries now use a "token" currency system, on where the underlying metal content (intrinsic value) is not directly related to the face value. Also after 1919, the price of silver had risen, so that it was no longer viable to produce silver coins of "sterling" standard (925 parts per 1000). Again this pattern has also been repeated world wide, so that most circulating coins now bear little relationship to their currency value.
