A Traditional Gift
In recent years we have seen the revival of an old tradition. Money or coins as a gift for a christening or birth has long been a tradition in many countries.
An idea in many peoples mind is to give a silver or gold coin, or a complete coin set, especially of the current year. As coin dealers, we welcome the revival of this tradition, but often the only source of coins for the current year has been the special proof sets of coins issued by the Royal Mint, who do have a slight monopoly! Although the royal Mint has been issuing proof gold sovereigns each year since 1979, until this year we held out against becoming a stockist and distributor. This has been largely because the same coins are often available a few years later at lower prices. For example, we sell the 1979 proof sovereigns at almost half the price of the 1999 issue.
When asked about the current year's sovereigns, we have always suggested taking a sovereign 100 years previous at about half the price of a new one.

O.K. We Give In!
This year we have given in to demand, and decided to stock the current 1999 sovereigns, which we offer for sale at £149, the same price as the Royal Mint, however we still firmly believe that an 1899 sovereign at about half the price, depending on condition, is a more unusual and thoughtful gift.
We also believe that they offer better long term value than a modern coin. We like to give our customers good value and advice. Unlike the Royal Mint, we also buy coins from collectors and the public, so we have an interest in ensuring that we give our customers good long term service and value, after all, they are our future suppliers.
