Obverse
Laureate head of George III facing right, the engravers name PISTRUCCI in raised letters beneath the neck
GEORGIUS III D G BRITANNIARUM REX F D
1820/10
This particular specimen has the '2' struck over a '1', and is what is known as an 'overdate', not untypical of older milled issues, when mintworkers accidently placed a digit belonging to a previous year's issue, and then corrected their mistake by altering the die and using it to strike the right digit over the old one.
Reverse:
The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's magnificent design of St. George on horseback slaying the dragon, first used on gold sovereigns of George III in 1817. His full name PISTRUCCI appears in the exergue to the right of the date.
The legend:-
HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE
is in a garter.
Edge
The edges are inscribed in raised lettering:-
DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI xxx
Where xxx represents the regnal year in Roman numerals.
