These substantial Russian copper coins (weighing approximately 50 grams) were issued by Catherine the Great, one of the famous 'enlightened despots' of the 18th century who worked towards modernising her realm. She usurped her husband, Peter III in 1762 and was said to have ordered his assasination several months later. She continued to reign as Empress Regnant even after her son had attained his majority, reigning until her own death in 1796.
Catherine, being what might be considered an extremely unfeminine and strong-willed woman for the time, was subject to many lurid rumours, during and after her lifetime. Some of them were substantiated, as she took many lovers, even when her husband was still alive. However, the most notorious one, involving her unnatural death at the hands of a stallion, was most certainly NOT true, and she died in bed following a stroke, whereupon her unfortunate son Paul I succeeded her.
