Third Bust Variety
The obverse of this coin uses the "Third Bust Variety", with the legend CAROLUS II DEI GRATIA.
The reverse design is crowned cruciform shields, with two interlinked letter C's, denoting Charles II, in the angles (spaces) between the shields, with the legend MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX 1671.
Regnal Dates on Edge
The regnal year is shown in raised lettering on the edge:
DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI VICESIMO TERTIO
This indicates the 23rd year of Charles reign, although 1671 was only the 12th year of his actual reign. The reason for this is that Charles II chose to ignore the interregnum period from 1649 to 1660, from the death of Charles I, through the period of The Commonwealth of England, and Oliver Cromwell.
